Learning to be picky

Krassimir has been an incredible eater. After the first day out of the orphanage when he would only take peach baby food, he has eaten pretty much everything we give him as long as it's pureed and served on a spoon.

And he's eaten quite a range - starting with jars of baby food in Sofia, and then moving to things like spaghetti, tuna casserole, chipotle black bean chili, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, chicken avacado and rice, tomato soup - everything!

Until tonight. ;) Tonight I made New Orleans red beans and rice, and it was a bit spicy. Not too spicy, and we made sure his mixture was heavier on the rice and added some plain yogurt to cool things down a bit, but our little man ate one spoonful and decided that was enough. Up came the hand that means "I'm done - no more" and it wasn't going in! No way he's full after one bite. ;) Now, he did have a slightly bigger and slightly later snack today, but not enough to eat one spoonful of supper and be done. I managed to here and there move a few more bites in, but not with the gusto that he usually eats with.

So we experimented, and got out a bit of applesauce.

That went down just fine. ;)

So, with an alternating routine I managed to get most of his bowl of beans and rice into him before the applesauce was gone, but more excitedly, we learned something - our child who normally does not show any discretion in what he is fed so long as it's a workable texture, has apparently decided that 1) his tummy is full enough that he's willing to skip a meal if it's not to his taste and 2) he's confident enough that there will be more food (and more palatable food!) coming in the not so distant future.

I think this is a huge thing for a boy who has spent so many years of his life so severely underfed to choose to refuse food based on preference.

Yay, Krassi!
